Fair Play Red Hat

From handball to offside, football needs rules to ensure a fair game - and Red Hat software subscriptions are no different. Read on to make sure your customers are playing by the rules!

FAIR PLAY

GREAT VALUE - BUT NOT ALL FOR FREE

  • Under General Public License, Red Hat Software Source codes are free to use, copy, modify and distribute.
  • When your customers purchase a Red Hat software subscription, they enter into an Enterprise Agreement that provides a commercial service offering much more than just technical support. Your customer benefits include:
  • - Access to more than 2200 certified software vendors supporting 3500 applications on Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • - Delivery of new features, fixes and security updates as soon as they are released
  • - Free and regular major upgrades
  • Subscriptions are how Red Hat stay in business, and they enable them to drive the open source innovation they are famous for.

FAIR PLAY HELPS EVERYONE WIN!

  • There's only one rule Red Hat ask your customers to play by: ONE ACTIVE SUBSCRIPTION PER INSTALLED SERVER
  • The scenarios described opposite break that rule and the terms of the Red Hat Enterprise Agreement.
  • Please contact the relevant customers if you think these scenarios apply to their Red Hat environment, and advise them of the one subsciption per server rule.

OFFSIDE!

EVERY SYSTEM NEEDS A SUBSCRIPTION

Red Hat's business model is all about delivering valuable services to their customers, one of which is providing access to certified, supported, and maintained software. Every Red Hat system benefits from those services, so a subscription is required for each instance.

MORE SYSTEMS DEPLOYED THAN ACTIVE SUBSCRIPTIONS

If your customers have multiple servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux...

...but they have fewer subscriptions than servers...

...they are in breach of the Red Hat Enterprise Agreement.

TO PLAY BY THE RULES, YOUR CUSTOMERS MUST:

  • Purchase one standard or premium subscription for every server.
  • It's the only way for your customers to be eligible for full support and service on their Red Hat Enterprise Linux installations.

HANDBALL!

EXPIRED SUBSCRIPTIONS INVALIDATE ALL SUBSCRIPTIONS

Because every instance of Red Hat running in a customer's environment must be associated with a subscription, they cannot allow some subscriptions to expire and continue to run the software on those servers.

A MIXTURE OF LIVE AND EXPIRED SUBSCRIPTIONS

If your customers have multiple servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux...

...and some of the subscriptions for those servers have expired...

...they are in breach of the Red Hat Enterprise Agreement.

TO PLAY FAIR, YOUR CUSTOMERS MUST:

  • Remove or renew the subscription for all the expired systems.
  • Ensure they have one active standard or premium subscription for every server at all times in the future.
  • It's the only way for your customers to be eligible for full support and service on ANY of their Red Hat Enterprise Linux installations.
